A long awaited update

Well, I guess it's been a long long time since I've last updated my blog.

Time here in Korea seems to flow differently. Or maybe once you get out of university and grow up, time takes on a different meaning than it once had. When I was younger I measured myself against my birthday, waiting for landmarks to come: The Driver's License, the day you're an adult, The Drinking age, then The Drinking Age again when I was in the USA. But now, time has no real landmark to look forward to, no real anticipation of a certain time. And I wonder if that helps screw up my perception of time. Anyways, I'm just rambling.

This month has been declared a charity month for the foreigners here. There is a family of 3 children whose Dad died and the mom left. The other members of the family can't help as much as they'd like, but they don't want the kids to go to an orphanage. The Uncle pays for their rent and utilities, but for food and schooling, these kids are left to their own devices. They came to the attention of some of the foreigners here and we've been looking after them for a few years. This month we have lots of fundraisers going on for them.
Last Wednesday we had a poker tournament with prizes donated and we raised about $800 in one night for them. I made it to the final 3 people, but it was getting late and I had to work the next day, so I didn't play as well I should have. First prize was free buy-ins for a month at the weekly poker game we have here. I usually don't go so it wasn't that big of a deal to lose.
This week we have a screen golf tournament. A buddy of mine and I have been playing one a week for the past little while. It's only $10 for 18 holes and if you get 4 guys out, it takes a good 3 hours to play. 1st prize for that is a used "Big Bertha" driver. Between my friend and I, I think we've got a good chance to win. My best score has been +5 and he has shot an Even.
Then later on we have a bowling tournament too. All in all we should end up raising over $1,200 for these kids.

My school has also had winter festival where they put on plays or dances in front of the parents.

We also went on a field trip to make some pottery and to visit a farming and irrigation museum. This was my mug that I made. You can see more here
